Malawi is one of the least developed countries in the world; 90% of the population lives in rural areas. There are an estimated 13 million people living in Malawi, with 14% of the population believed to be infected with HIV/AIDS. Less than 20% of the population achieves a Primary School Leaving Certificate.
There are over two million orphans in Malawi. The number of children growing up on the streets of urban areas is rising as a result of unfavorable economic conditions worsened by the breakdown of extended family arrangements. Estimates in Malawi suggest that about ten thousand children or more live in the streets of Malawi's major cities. The most vulnerable households send their children to the streets to beg.
Notwithstanding the introduction of free primary education in 1994, many parents and guardians could not afford school uniforms, writing materials and the school funds required for the maintenance of school attendance. These children are forced to wander the streets, in search of work or begging without any prospects of improving their lives. Therefore, alternative learning opportunities are needed to provide for the education of all Malawian children
Who We Are
Agape Scholars International, Inc. was developed after Dr. Eugene A. Dunkley Jr. and his wife Rev. Jennifer Dunkley spent eleven months in Malawi. During their time in Malawi, Dr. Dunkley worked as a visiting Fulbright professor at the College of Medicine, University of Malawi in Blantyre while his wife worked as a volunteer at a charity that focused on the welfare of street children. It was during this experience that they became aware of the social exclusion faced by street children. This situation led them to start a charity which provides access to education for orphans and street children.
Presently, Eugene is a professor of biology at Greenville University and Jennifer works in social services in Illinois. They are also ministering as pastors at Coffeen Free Methodist Church in Illinois. Eugene and Jennifer have three children and two grandchildren.
The goal of Agape Scholars International is to provide education for orphans and street children in Malawi. We offer tutoring in reading, writing, science, history and mathematics courses to prepare students for success in taking the Malawi Primary Leaving Certificate Examination. Furthermore, the children are taught biblical principles and moral values, which are critical for the spiritual development and the foundation of a community that cares.
