Today’s the day! International Day of the Street Child

” As I think about today being International Day of the Street Child, I remember my time with the kids of Agape House Blantyre. It was such a joy just being with them, yet I was also filled with heartache knowing that I couldn’t fully communicate (due to my limited Chichewa) God’s love and care for them. I’m forever grateful that the language barrier didn’t keep us from forming friendships, from them giving us hug after hug, and from having the time of our lives playing duck

Free Methodist Gateway Conference Donates Backpacks to Students

We would love to send a big shout out of our thanks to the Free Methodist Gateway Conference, Superintendent Tolly, and Mrs. Campbell for generously giving our students new backpacks and Bibles. The joy is clear on their faces! The students at our Agape House locations were able to receive these gifts while Greenville University students were visiting during the month of January. #Bibles #donations #students #malawi #generosity #faith #agapehouse #scholars #joy #africa #faith

    #GivingStories : Marissa Erwin

In January of 2016, I was a part of something that forever changed my life for the better. I was given an opportunity to go to a land that I had dreamed of since I fell in love with The Lion King as a child- Africa. My college was very involved with a wide array of mission opportunities, and it was through that school and the wonderful influence of my adviser that first sparked my interest in traveling to the small country of Malawi located in Sub-Saharan Africa. I had seen t

“After seeing my daughter become involved as a volunteer with Agape Scholars International, I really became aware and knew there was a need that needed to be met for the street children in Blantyre, Malawi. I knew it was not something I needed to pray about, I knew I just needed to act. It was as if God was telling me, “join in and help the kids who need help.” I was putting feet to my faith. In 2016, my daughter took a trip to visit the school in Malawi and we were able to s

    Lunch with Mrs. Hassan

Agape House Blantyre had a great week! On Thursday, the children received a visitor from Canada who came with a regular visitor, Mrs. Hassan. They made and had lunch with our children. She made rice, chicken, and collard greens. On top of that, she brought little goodie bags for the children filled with jelly, soda, snacks, and candy. She also gave soap for our children to use during their hygiene routines in the morning. We are so grateful they came to spend time with the st

“Wisdom Begins With Wonder”: Creative Arts at Limbe

At Agape House, we believe that our students have the ability to not just survive, but to thrive. One way we hope to empower our students is to go beyond literacy and to encourage creativity. Because the school year is divided into three terms with a summer break from July until September, we have aimed to continue to provide support for our students during the summer months. With some of our most vulnerable kids located in Limbe, we have opened up a summer arts and crafts pr

    Sending Encouragement to Mbayani Students

With the closing of the second term in Malawi, our Agape House Blantyre staff was invited to visit Likhubula Primary School where many of our Mbayani Back to School Project Students attend public school. It was a time of celebration as the school finished yet another term. During this time, Agape House staff had an opportunity to encourage Mbayani students to study hard over their break so that they can succeed in the terms to come. Encouragement is a vital part of our role w

The Great Mountain of Malawi: Secondary School

Under a shady tree in rural Malawi sits 60 plus eager students ready to learn from their overwhelmed teacher. Without proper desks or school supplies to learn with, the teacher and students both make due with what they have. While it is difficult to learn without a school building, the students are still grateful to have the chance to learn at all. However,  the overcrowding and competition of 60 or more classmate creates students who fall through the cracks and cannot keep u

    Davie Ndala’s Dedication to Education

This past May, our Standard Eight class took the Primary School Leaving Certificate Exams. One of our bright students to pass this rigorous exam and excel into secondary school was Davie Ndala. Davie Ndala is an incredibly hard working student. In fact, he is so dedicated to his studies, that others have witnessed him reading an English dictionary while playing soccer with his fellow classmates in their free time. Davie was even capable of translating from English into Chiche

This test covers subjects like mathematics, science, and life skills among other topics. After studying for several years, the standard 8 class has the opportunity to take a test which determines whether the student can move onto Secondary School (high school). For many, achieving the title of a secondary school student is a high mountain that cannot

Young Life Camp Africa: The Continent of Young People

The mango tree is a staple fruit in Malawi. With most non- fruit bearing trees being cut down for firewood and deforestation prevalent , you can almost be sure that the tree you are seeing is a Mango tree or other fruit tree of some sort. Although it takes the mango tree three years to grow, a slow process when there is great poverty, the mango tree produces a large bounty of fruit that provides nourishment for many people in the long run. Like the mango tree, Young Life Afri
