Learning About Weather: Agape House Blantyre Takes Field Trip to Airport

Through Agape Scholars International’s partnership with Thawandie Private School for the Mbayani Back to School Program, our Agape House Blantyre school was invited this past Thursday to take a field trip to Blantyre’s Chileka Airport in order to educate the students about weather conditions. While they were there, they were able to see weather measuring instruments in action while also enjoying seeing many airplanes landing and taking off from the airport. We are so excited

    Davie Ndala’s Dedication to Education

This past May, our Standard Eight class took the Primary School Leaving Certificate Exams. One of our bright students to pass this rigorous exam and excel into secondary school was Davie Ndala. Davie Ndala is an incredibly hard working student. In fact, he is so dedicated to his studies, that others have witnessed him reading an English dictionary while playing soccer with his fellow classmates in their free time. Davie was even capable of translating from English into Chiche

Baking for Agape House Provides New Uniforms

In the United States, generally speaking, the talk of school uniforms is quite frightening. School boards across the nation have debated their pros and cons for decades upon decades. However, in Malawi, all students wear school uniforms. In fact, one can distinguish which school a child attends based upon the uniform he or she wears. In some sense, uniforms can provide dignity for the student who is able to remain in school and receive an education. Many of the students at Ag

    Joseph Clement

This week Agape House is proud to present Joseph Clement. He is a ten year old student from the district of Mbayani in Blantyre, Malawi. After dropping out of school in the second grade, he has returned to school with us. We are thrilled that he was not found in the streets!  Joseph has three siblings and lives with his parents. Together they enjoy worshiping the Lord together at the Seventh Day Adventist church. Joseph loves that he has a place to hear the Word of God and th

    Blessings Nsona

What a “blessing” it is to have Blessings Nsona as a student at Agape House! After being found on the street one year ago, he has continued his education at Agape and has returned to first grade. He is a ten year old with four other siblings. Due to his parent’s divorce, life has become difficult financially and emotionally for his family. Together they go to the Church of Christ in order to worship the Lord in the midst of their circumstances. This week at Agape, Blessings l

    Trinity

Trinity has three younger siblings. They all live together with their mother who works in a restaurant in their district of Mbayani. As a family, they attend the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall together. At Agape House this week Trinity has learned to multiply numbers in math class. She is dreaming big to become a doctor after she finishes school. As we have mentioned in previous posts, this is a bit of a cultural taboo for women, as it is seen as a “man’s job.” We love that s

    Happy Teacher’s Appreciation Day

Happy Teacher’s Appreciation Day! In honor of this day, here are some highlights from an interview with our standard 8 Teacher, Charles Kaolowa. Q. How did you become involved in Agape House? A. “At first i was teaching at a secondary school since 2007 until 2013. Then, on April 29, 2013 I received a call from William ( Project Manager) asking if I am interested to work with street kids and without hesitating I started working at Agape House on May 1, 2013.” Q: How would you

    What is a Street Child?

There are over 120 million “street children” across the world. 30 million of them can be found in Africa. What exactly is a street child anyway? The Humanium organization and SOS Children’s Villages describe a street child like this: “Street children are minors who live and survive on the streets often growing up in landfills or under bridges in major cities. Because of conflicts with their families these children do not want to or cannot return home.” There are two types of

Ronny Kapasule came to Agape House after dropping out of school in the second grade. Her mother has passed away and her father is living in Mozambique. Without the support of her parents, Ronny lives with her aunt, although she has been unable to find employment. It is for these reasons that Ronny has come to Agape House. We are so glad that she was not found on the streets however. We are so glad that she has come to learn with us. She loves that she can have a free educatio

    Searchlight Orphan Care

Agape House believes in reaching Malawi’s most vulnerable population- children. Recently, in order to do this, we have been providing food for Searchlight Orphan Care children’s home in rural Malawi. The following is an expert from Duncan Nyozani explaining Searchlight and the prevalence of orphans in Malawi. “Searchlight Orphan Care is a community based youth focused charity. It is registered charity and is registered by the Malawian Government under the Ministry of Gender,

    Let the Little Children Come

As you look at this sweet little girl, you can’t help but to wonder…Surely this little bitty thing doesn’t have to beg on the streets of Blantyre!? She is hardly able to talk on her own yet, hardly able to walk on her own, hardly able to take care of herself.  My heart cried in anguish at the mere thought of this sweet girl having to beg just to eat her daily bread. My heart cried, “Oh God, why??” The reality is that the little toddlers come to Agape House not because they th

Friday William: 1000 Kwacha can go a Long Way

Friday William is a bright eleven year old from the capital city of Lilongwe. Although it is unclear how he made his way to Blantyre, we do know that Friday is having a rough time because he doesn’t have anywhere to stay or sleep peacefully and has been on the streets for about four years. When Friday was in the third grade, he had to drop out of school due to the death of his father. Growing up, Friday came from a diverse background as his father was Muslim while his mother

They encourage others to volunteer at the school, gain experience, and change the lives of some of the most vulnerable children.  In addition to sending volunteers, Snap a Gap donated several books for the children this week.
